This recently renovated pub, located only 45 minutes from the centre of Cheltenham, is a haven away from the bustle of the town where patrons can relax and enjoy a home-cooked meal in cosy environs. The regularly held special events make this a local favourite, while the well-appointed bed and breakfast facilities attract guests from further afield looking to enjoy a comfortable weekend away. As a result, the pub's clientele is pleasingly eclectic and the ambience is sociable and lively. In fact, if you're staying in one of the seven en-suite guest rooms, the proprietors will pick you up from the train station (which offers a direct service from London Paddington) - typical of the first-rate service offered at The Swan.
There are two inviting seating areas to choose from - an intimate dining room and a larger bar area. Perhaps sip something from the great selection of ales while challenging your companions to a game of pool in the bar, or enjoy a refreshing glass of wine from the selective list. Lattes and cappuccinos are available too, and coffee can also be ordered in a cafetiere for one or two people. You can even treat yourself to a traditional afternoon cream tea.
Alternatively, pull up a pew in the attractive restaurant and enjoy some traditional fare, which is all freshly prepared using local ingredients. At lunchtime, choose from a selection of generously filled sandwiches, baguettes and jacket potatoes. In the evening, perhaps begin with plump garlic mushrooms in a white wine, garlic and cream sauce or rich homemade pate with toast. Follow with a wholesome main such as 10oz sirloin or 8oz rib-eye steak with mushrooms, tomato, onion rings, chips and the sauce of your choice. The homemade pies come highly recommended too - especially the classic steak and ale. The timeless appeal of this lovely pub - not to mention the top-quality food and service - will make it one of your firm favourites in no time.
